The calm blue water of the Sound, mirror-still and ringed by native bush

Location

Right on Queen Charlotte Drive

On the Mahakipawa Arm of the Kenepuru Sound — ringed by native forest, private and not overlooked, yet easy to reach.

A bush stream running full after rain in the native forest

All around you

Forest, freshwater and birdsong

A bush stream runs full after rain, the canopy is loud with tūī and bellbird, and the shallows draw herons and spoonbills. It is the kind of quiet you can feel — the reason people come, and the reason they stay longer than they meant to.

The canopy & the shallows

Some of the native birds that share this corner of the Sounds — many seen without ever leaving the deck.

Out the door

The garden & the grounds

Lawns to wander, beds that change with the seasons, and fruit and flowers through the year — all yours to enjoy.

The Sounds

A drowned-valley coast of bays and coves

The Marlborough Sounds are old river valleys flooded by the sea — a maze of sheltered arms where native forest runs to the waterline. The Milestone sits on one of the quietest, the Mahakipawa Arm, where the tide keeps the only schedule that matters.

While you're here

Days as full or as empty as you like

  1. 01

    Watch the birds

Tūī, kōtare, weka and the wading spoonbills. The spotting scope lives by the window.

  2. 02

    Take to the water

Kayak the still arm at dawn, or simply swim off the edge of the day.

  3. 03

    Ride the Drive

Loop out to Picton or Havelock for lunch and back — one of the country’s great roads.

  4. 04

    Walk in the bush

Native forest tracks and the freshwater stream after rain, minutes from the door.

  5. 05

    Wait for the dark

Away from the town lights, the stars come out in force over the water.

  6. 06

    Do nothing at all

The most popular activity at The Milestone, and the one we recommend.
